Mandy Moore

After breaking into the recording industry with voiceovers and commercials, Mandy Moore signed with Sony in 1999. Her debut album, 1999’s So Real, which included her best-known hit, “Candy,” was followed by I Wanna Be With You and Mandy Moore. Moore then parlayed her music success into an acting career, with roles in the teen romances A Walk To Remember and How to Deal, among others. She later voiced Rapunzel in the 2010 animated hit Tangled and starred in the hit TV show This Is Us.

Early Life and Music Career

Amanda Leigh Moore was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, on April 10, 1984. The daughter of an airline pilot and former news reporter, Moore was raised outside of Orlando, Florida. She was first inspired to sing after watching a performance of the musical Guys and Dolls when she was six. Some of her first public performances were at sporting events and she was even dubbed “The National Anthem Girl” for the numerous times she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Moore got her first big break when she was only 13 years old. She was overheard singing during a demo recording session by a FedEx delivery person. This person passed along her demo to a friend at Sony Music, and she eventually scored a contract with Sony’s Epic Records label when she was still a student at Orlando’s Bishop Moore High School.

Music, Movies and TV Roles

Moore quickly became caught up in a pop music whirlwind. In 1999, she joined N’Sync on tour to promote her first single, “Candy.” Moore then released her debut album, So Real, later that year. She followed up her initial wave of success with 2000’s I Wanna Be With You.

‘The Princess Diaries,’ ‘A Walk to Remember’

Moore soon branched out into acting, landing a supporting role in The Princess Diaries (2001), starring Anne Hathaway. She then scored a leading role in the teen romance A Walk To Remember (2002), starring opposite Shane West. Moore continued to juggle her musical career as well, releasing Mandy Moore (2001) and Coverage (2003). At the time, she wasn’t able to step out of the shadows of teen pop stars like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

‘Saved!’ to ‘Licensed to Wed’

For a time, Moore seemed to focus more on acting. She starred in the romantic comedy Chasing Liberty and the religion-themed comedy Saved! with Macaulay Culkin, both in 2004. Moore went on to recurring roles on such shows as Entourage and Scrubs.

In 2006, she starred with Hugh Grant and Dennis Quaid in American Dreamz, a spoof of TV singing competitions like American Idol. Moore then starred in several romantic comedies, including in Because I Said So (2007), with Diane Keaton, and License to Wed (2007), with Robin Williams and John Krasinski.

Meanwhile, her albums Wild Hope (2007) and Amanda Leigh (2009) made little headway on the charts.

‘Tangled’

Moore scored a big hit with the Disney animated smash Tangled (2010). She voiced the lead character of Rapunzel, a part that also incorporated her singing talents. Moore later reprised her princess role on the small screen in the animated Tangled: The Series, which aired from 2017 into 2020.

‘This Is Us’

Following a recurring role on the short-lived medical drama Red Band Society from 2014 to 2015, Moore landed a meatier part in the hit family drama This Is Us in 2016, alongside Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of wife and mom Rebecca Pearson that year, and shared SAG Awards with the rest of the cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Moore picked up an Emmy nomination for her impressive work on the show in 2019.

‘Silver Landings’

Following an extended hiatus from the studio, Moore returned with Silver Landings in March 2020. The album drew a largely positive response from critics, who praised the maturity and depth of the material from the former teen pop star.

Personal Life

On November 18, 2018, Moore married musician Taylor Goldsmith in a private backyard ceremony in Los Angeles. The two had been dating since mid-2015, after Moore expressed support on Instagram for Goldsmith’s band, Dawes. In September 2020, the couple announced they were expecting their first child. Their son, August Harrison, was born in February 2021.

Moore was previously married to musician Ryan Adams from 2009 to 2015. She also dated actors Wilmer Valderrama and Zach Braff and professional tennis player Andy Roddick.

On March 25, 2019, the singer and actress was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
