With global warming, you simply can’t trust the weather nowadays.

And Liv Tyler was caught out in a wind-related wardrobe malfunction when a breeze blew open the skirt of her black and blue wrap dress to a reveal a glimpse of her sheer black undies as she walked back to her New York apartment on Wednesday morning.

The actress, who celebrated her 37th birthday the day before, had just appeared on Live With Kelly & Michael to promote her new HBO drama, The Leftovers.

The chic black and blue mini-dress, fastened just under her bust, revealed her beautiful long legs – until the breeze intervened to show off a lot more.

The smiling star seemed unaware that she was flashing her undies and didn’t attempt to pull the dress down. The wind also played havoc with her long brunette tresses, blowing the gentle curls across her face.

Liv added extra height to her willowy 5ft 10ins frame with high-heeled black sandals, making her legs look even longer. She went light on the accessories, wearing a few rings and clasping a small black clutch under her arm.

With dark glasses covering her eyes, the Lords Of The Rings star also went light on the makeup, choosing natural base and blush for her pale skin and rose pink lipstick. Her bright red nails added a pop of colour.

Earlier, the actress was snapped smiling as she left her New York apartment on her way to the studio.

The Leftovers, which bowed on Sunday, takes place in the fictional town of Mapleton in Upstate New York that is thrown into confusion after the sudden Rapture-like disappearance of two percent of the world’s population.

Liv plays Meg Abbott – a woman who runs out on her wedding and is then targeted by a strange cult.

Screen time: Liv watched her HBO show’s premiere on Sunday and posted an Instagram snap with the message, ‘Last night Friends loves cuddles on the couch popcorn #theleftovers first time ever on tv. ‘

‘We’re still all getting to know our characters so she’s still a bit of a mystery to me,’ Liv said of Meg during a recent press conference. ‘Maybe if there’s a second season, we’ll get to know more.’

When she’s not shooting her HBO series, Liv is mother to her nine-year-old son Milo with her ex-husband, British rocker Royston Langdon, who divorced in 2010.

On Monday, she posted a cute Instagram snap of her and Milo watching her new series on TV with the excited message:’ Last night 💛 Friends 💛 loves 💛cuddles on the couch 💛popcorn 🎥#theleftovers 🎥first time ever on tv. ‘

The leggy beauty is also in the July issue of US Glamour.

For her feature she modeled stunning snakeskin dresses by both Givenchy and Michael Kors.

She also said that going from movies to TV was tricky.

‘In a movie you know the beginning, middle and end. You know your schedule,’ she said. ‘With television you’re getting to know your character as time goes by.’

She added, ‘I’m used to planning. I can’t do that anymore.’

Tyler, who turns 37 in July, added that she has learned to ‘appreciate’ her looks. ‘It’s sort of silly to be against yourself all the time,’ she confessed.

‘I’ve noticed a change in my face this year. The jowls I got from my dad seem more pronounced. I’ve got a couple of gray hairs.

‘But I’ve noticed that when I’m happy and healthy on the inside – eating well, laughing with my best friend – I feel more beautiful on the outside.’
